Little limestone hills, flowery woods and the huge tidal sands of Morecambe Bay, all packed into a small friendly corner
Where Lancashire meets Cumbria on the edge of Morecambe Bay, the land breaks up into low limestone knolls, flowery grassland and pockets of old woodland. It’s a small place, 76 square kilometres, but there’s a lot crammed in. Arnside Knott is an obvious walk, a short pull to a top with the bay spread out below and the Lakeland fells behind.
The limestone gives it real botanical interest — Gait Barrows and its pavements, the woods of Eaves Wood, the reedy pool at Hawes Water. Treat the bay itself with respect, though. Those bright sands look inviting but they hide fast tides and quicksand, and people have died walking out unguided. Stay on the marked paths and the shore, and leave any crossing of the sands to the official guided walks.
