Elizabethan hall with world-famous topiary garden.

Levens Hall, an Elizabethan house in the Kent valley south of Kendal, has a topiary garden laid out in the 1690s by Guillaume Beaumont and clipped ever since into a crowd of cones, pyramids and curious shapes. It’s often called the oldest topiary garden in the world, and remarkably it still follows Beaumont’s original plan. Open seasonally with paid admission; Oxenholme station is about 5km to the north-east.
