Romney’s has made Kendal Mint Cake in Kendal since 1918, and its bars have a good claim to fame: they went up Everest with the team on the first successful ascent in 1953. The mix of sugar, glucose and peppermint oil is pure walkers’ fuel. It’s a producer rather than a shopfront, so look for the bars in shops around the Lakes. Quiggin’s is the older Kendal rival.
