In the Lyth Valley, damson country south-west of Kendal, Crosthwaite is a scattered village around St Mary’s church and the well-regarded Punch Bowl Inn. Come in spring and the orchards froth with damson blossom; late summer brings the fruit itself, still a local speciality sold at the roadside. It’s an easy hop over the hill to Underbarrow.
