Grey and limestone-built, the “Auld Grey Town” of Kendal is the main gateway to the Lakes from the south, strung along the River Kent below its ruined castle. It’s the home of Kendal Mint Cake, the sugar slab beloved of hillwalkers and mountaineers, and Abbot Hall’s galleries are worth an hour if the weather turns. The station sits just north-east of the centre.
