Sizergh is a National Trust house a few miles south of Kendal, built around a medieval pele tower and still lived in by the Strickland family. Its big limestone rock garden — the largest the Trust owns — was built in the 1920s and now holds a national collection of hardy ferns, at their best around the stumpery and orchard. Gardens and house open with admission; National Trust members go free.
