Cartmel came through the Dissolution almost whole, because its foundation charter obliged it to keep an altar for the parish and the south aisle was duly saved as the parish church. A gorgeous thing to find in a village this size, and topped by a belfry set at 45 degrees across the tower below it — thought to be the only one like it in the country. Cartmel has the Cavendish Arms and a racecourse.
