One of Holker’s great sights is a lime tree so old and vast it’s been named among Britain’s 50 great trees — the Great Holker Lime, its trunk nearly eight metres round. The hall near Cark has been a Cavendish family home since the 1750s, and its formal and woodland gardens open seasonally with paid admission. Cark station is barely a kilometre away, which makes this a genuinely easy one to reach by train.
