Fancy a day at the races with a Cumbrian twist? Cartmel Racecourse is one of Britain’s smallest and prettiest National Hunt tracks, set in meadows beside Cartmel village and its priory. Racing happens on just a handful of bank-holiday fixtures through the summer, when the fields fill with a funfair and food stalls as much as horses. You’ll need a ticket on race days; the rest of the year it’s quiet grass.
