Shaped like a lighthouse but never lit, the Hoad Monument is a 100-foot tower on the hill above Ulverston, built in 1850 to honour the town’s own Sir John Barrow, the Admiralty man and Arctic explorer. It’s modelled on Smeaton’s Eddystone lighthouse. The walk up the hill is open any time and free; to climb the 112 steps inside you’ll need to come on a Sunday or bank holiday between April and October, when the flag flies.
