Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston in 1890, and this cobbled Furness market town honours him with a Laurel and Hardy museum. Up on Hoad Hill above the streets stands the Hoad Monument, a replica of a lighthouse built in 1850 for the Ulverston-born statesman Sir John Barrow — climbable on open days for the view over Morecambe Bay. The station is a short walk from the market square.
