Rivington scatters itself below Rivington Pike, the landmark hill topped by a stone tower on the western edge of the moors. Lord Leverhulme laid out extraordinary terraced gardens on the slopes above the village in the early 1900s, designed with the landscape architect Thomas Mawson and now restored for walkers to wander. Down below there’s a green, an old chapel and a reservoir-side café. Adlington station is about 3km to the south-west.
