Lord Leverhulme laid out these dramatic terraced gardens on the wooded slopes below Rivington Pike, and after decades of neglect they’ve become a wonderfully atmospheric place to explore, with stone terraces, steps and follies half-swallowed by the trees. The Pigeon Tower still stands at the top, and it’s an easy add-on to a walk round the Rivington reservoirs. Free and open access, above Rivington village.
