Places to explore in KentEngland · South East England

The chalk of the North Downs runs east across Kent to end in the White Cliffs of Dover, the country's front door to the Continent. This has always been the invasion coast, guarded by Dover Castle above the harbour, and the landing place of Augustine's mission, which raised Canterbury Cathedral. Orchards and hop gardens earned the county its old name of the Garden of England. The Kent Downs shelter moated manors and great fortresses like Leeds Castle on its lake, while south lie the shingle and marsh of Dungeness.
