St Nicholas at Barfreston is a small Norman church, built around 1180 of imported Caen stone and covered in carved decoration. Its south doorway and the wheel window in the east wall are among the finest Romanesque work in England, closely matched by St Mary’s at Patrixbourne a few miles north. Usually open daily. Shepherds Well station is about 2km to the south.
