New Romney was once a Cinque Port and the “capital” of Romney Marsh, until the great storm of 1287 turned the River Rother away towards Rye and left the town stranded inland. So much shingle was thrown up that you now go down steps to enter its big Norman church, St Nicholas’. It’s also a stop on the miniature Romney railway; the nearest main-line station is Appledore, about 10km north-west.
