Dungeness is a huge shingle headland scattered with fishing boats, old railway carriages and clapboard huts, with a nuclear power station and two lighthouses out at the point. It’s sometimes called Britain’s only desert. The narrow-gauge Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway runs down to it from Hythe. Access is open and free; the nearest mainline station is Appledore, about 17km to the north-west.
