Cobbled hilltop town, cinematic Mermaid Street.
Rye is an old hilltop town above the Rother marshes, once a Cinque Port and now full of cobbled lanes and antique shops. Steep Mermaid Street climbs past timbered houses to the Norman church; nearby is Lamb House, where the writer Henry James lived, now National Trust. The station sits just below the town.
