One of Rye’s landmarks, the Mermaid Inn stands on the steep cobbles of Mermaid Street, an ancient inn rebuilt in the 1420s and long tied to the town’s smuggling gangs. It runs today as a hotel with a bar and restaurant. Rye station is about 300m away, just downhill.
