Places to explore in East SussexEngland · South East England

The chalk of the South Downs runs to the sea here, breaking off in the white cliffs of Birling Gap and Seven Sisters and the headland of Beachy Head. Behind them the sandstone ridges and wooded ghylls of the High Weald roll north to Ashdown Forest. This is 1066 country: the Normans landed at Pevensey Castle and won the crown a few miles inland at Battle Abbey. Moated Bodiam Castle and the cobbled hill town of Rye came later, guarding a coast that has never stopped shifting.
