Pevensey is built inside the walls of a Roman shore fort, later reused as a Norman castle — William the Conqueror’s army came ashore near here in 1066. A single street of old cottages runs past the medieval Mint House. The castle is looked after by English Heritage. Pevensey Bay station is about 500m to the south-east.
