Herstmonceux has two very different landmarks. A moated 15th-century brick castle sits at one edge of the parish; nearby stand the green domes of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory, which moved out here from London between 1948 and 1957 to escape the city’s light. The telescopes now form the Observatory Science Centre, open to visitors. Pevensey Bay is the nearest station, about 8km to the south.
