Michelham Priory started life in 1229 as a house for Augustinian canons, set on an island in a loop of the Cuckmere on the edge of the Pevensey Levels. Like every religious house in the country, it was closed down under Henry VIII, and what survived the Dissolution was gradually converted into a private home, so what stands today is really a Tudor house built around a medieval core. The 15th-century gatehouse is the oldest obvious survivor, sturdy enough that it never needed rebuilding, with later building work filling out the rest of the footprint over the centuries since.

A moat rings the entire site, the longest stretch of continuously water-filled medieval moat anywhere in England, close to a kilometre round. It still works as intended, keeping the house and gardens on their own quiet island reached by a single bridge. The working watermill on site is a highlight for younger visitors, but it’s worth keeping a close eye on kids near the water and the moving parts, since neither is built with small explorers in mind.

Inside the moat there are kitchen and herb gardens to walk round as well as the priory buildings themselves, and Sussex Archaeological Society, which runs the place now alongside several other historic sites across the county, keeps the working parts of the estate ticking over rather than treating it purely as a museum piece. It’s close enough to Arlington Reservoir for a two-stop day out, with Herstmonceux Castle, Alfriston Clergy House and Wilmington Priory all within reach too, plenty to fill an afternoon on Sussex’s smaller historic sites.
