The grounds registered here are the wider setting for Herstmonceux Castle: 600 acres of parkland and gardens developed mostly in the 20th century, when Sir Paul Latham, who owned the castle from 1933 to 1946, laid out the Elizabethan Garden within its 1570s walls, a rose garden, and a folly built as an eyecatcher from the castle windows. There’s also a wildflower meadow, an orchard and an avenue of sweet chestnuts said to be 300 years old. It opens year-round, ticketed, alongside the castle and the Observatory Science Centre next door.
