Brickwall House in Northiam was built for the Frewen family in the early 1600s and stayed in their hands for three centuries; it’s now home to Frewen College. Behind it, some of the oldest walled gardens in Sussex hold 300-year-old magnolias, a Jacobean bowling green and a yew topiary chess garden backing onto an old deer park. The college opens the grounds to the public on occasional charity days rather than a regular season — Great Dixter down the road is the more reliable visit.
