Northiam is a Weald village set around a green with an ancient oak, under which Elizabeth I is said to have dined in 1573. Close by is Great Dixter, the house remodelled by Edwin Lutyens and made famous by the gardener Christopher Lloyd, and the Kent & East Sussex steam railway. Doleham is the nearest station, about 8km south, though trains there are sparse.
