A preserved steam railway running the Rother valley from Tenterden down to Bodiam, right by the castle
The Kent & East Sussex is a preserved steam line — an old country railway saved from closure and run now by volunteers for the ride itself. Trains work their way for about ten miles along the Rother valley between Tenterden in Kent and Bodiam in Sussex, hauled by steam engines and vintage carriages. The line began as one of Colonel Stephens’ light railways, the cheaply built rural routes that once threaded parts of England, and it has kept that unhurried character. Bodiam station is a short walk from Bodiam Castle, the moated 14th-century fortress, which makes the two an easy pairing. The railway runs through the High Weald, and the gardens at Great Dixter are close to the far end.
