Crowborough is the highest ground in the High Weald, though the summit is a water tower and golf course, not open moor

It’s the highest point anywhere in the High Weald, at 242 metres, and the drop on its flanks is enough to count as a Marilyn. The actual summit sits inside the town itself, shared with houses, a water tower and a golf course, so don’t come expecting wide-open solitude.
What it does have is a literary resident. Arthur Conan Doyle lived in Crowborough for decades, and there’s a memorial to him in the town centre. For a longer walk rather than a summit tick, Ashdown Forest a few miles west or the Crowborough nature reserve just outside town both give more open ground to move through, all of it inside the High Weald.
