Old Lodge is a stretch of open heath on the edge of Ashdown Forest, run by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and free to walk. Heathland like this is low, acid ground where gorse, heather, birch and Scots pine grow rather than dense woodland, and it is good country for birds: redstart and tree pipit flit among the scattered trees in spring and summer, and nightjars churr on warm dusks. Paths cross the reserve and give long views out over the High Weald. It is within easy reach of the more famous corners of the forest, with Gill’s Lap and Poohsticks Bridge both a short drive north.
