A huge outcrop of sandstone boulders sits opposite an 18th-century house near Withyham, built for the family of William Penn of Pennsylvania. The poet Dorothy Wellesley lived here in the 20th century — a friend of Vita Sackville-West and W.B. Yeats, who both visited — and the garden that grew up around her is now a mix of walled borders, woodland and a lake, with temples dotted through it. Opens a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, plus by arrangement for groups. Eridge station is about 2.5km east.
