Come at low tide and there’s a strip of shingle and chalk at the foot of the Seven Sisters, the run of white chalk cliffs along the East Sussex coast. A steel staircase drops to the beach from the National Trust car park up top — the older ones kept being lost as the cliffs crumble back, which they do quickly here. People swim, poke about the rock pools when the sea has gone out, and walk the clifftop where the South Downs Way and King Charles III England Coast Path run along the edge. The chalk falls without warning, so keep well clear of the cliff base and the top edge alike. Belle Tout, the old lighthouse that was moved back from the eroding cliff edge in the 1990s, stands a mile to the east.
