Up on the downs behind Brighton, ringed by a grassy bank and ditch, Hollingbury is an Iron Age hillfort — a hilltop enclosure people fortified and lived in some 2,500 years ago. The ramparts still trace a rough square around the 180-metre summit, now open grass inside Hollingbury Park, next to a golf course and easy to reach from the city. Most people climb up for the view: Brighton and Hove spread out below, the sea beyond, and the South Downs rolling away east and west. Ditchling Beacon rises to the north, and there’s another prehistoric camp on Whitehawk Hill across the city.
