Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, built on steep streets and narrow twittens above the Ouse. A Norman castle stands at the top, the ruins of a Cluniac priory lie below, and Tom Paine lodged here before sailing for America. It’s known for its enormous Bonfire Night on 5 November. The station is a short walk from the centre.
