The Middle House is a striking timber-framed building of 1575 on the High Street at Mayfield, reputedly built for Sir Thomas Gresham, financier to Elizabeth I. Grade I listed, it now works as a pub, restaurant and small hotel. Crowborough station is about 6km to the north-west.
