Burwash strings along a High Weald ridge, a single street of weatherboard and tile-hung houses. Just below the village is Bateman’s, the Jacobean house where Rudyard Kipling lived from 1902 until his death — now National Trust, with his study kept much as he left it. Stonegate station is about 3km to the north-west.
