Battle is the town that grew up around the abbey William the Conqueror founded on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. The high street runs from the great abbey gatehouse past shops and old inns, and you can walk the battlefield itself, now looked after by English Heritage. The station is right in town, under a kilometre from the centre.
