Timber-framed Downland village by the Cuckmere.
Alfriston sits in the Cuckmere valley below the bare Downs, with a market cross, a green called the Tye and a couple of medieval timbered inns. The thatched Clergy House here was the first building the National Trust ever bought, back in 1896. It’s a popular start point for South Downs walks. Berwick station is about 3.5km to the north.
