The Shell Grotto is an underground passage in Margate whose walls and roof are covered with millions of shells set in swirling mosaic panels. It was discovered in 1835, and nobody has ever pinned down who made it or why. Entry is paid, and opening is seasonal. Margate station is about 1km to the west.
