Gravesend Cemetery began life in 1834 as a pleasure garden for day-trippers arriving off the Thames steamboats, before being laid out as a cemetery in 1838 by Stephen Geary, the architect behind Highgate Cemetery’s grand entrance. Gravesham council has run it since 1905, and it’s open daily and free like any municipal cemetery — roughly 8am to 5:30pm in summer, 8am to 4pm through winter, with gates locking on the dot. It’s a short walk from Gravesend blockhouse on the Thames.
