Long Barn is the medieval farmhouse where Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson lived from 1915 to 1930, extending it and laying out a garden of terraces, ponds and clipped yew hedges before they moved on to make a rather more famous one at Sissinghurst. It’s privately owned today and rarely open, though the current owners run pre-arranged tours for groups, and the garden turns up on occasional charity open days. The Greensand Way passes close by, and Sackville-West’s ancestral home, Knole, is a few miles northeast.
