Godmersham Park is a Georgian mansion built in 1732, later the home of Jane Austen’s brother Edward Austen Knight — she visited often, and the house is thought to have shaped parts of Mansfield Park. The house itself isn’t open to visitors, but the walled kitchen garden, rose garden and Italian garden open a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, plus pre-booked group tours run through the local heritage centre. A public footpath crosses the estate near Chilham Castle, with views of the house and its folly.
