Fordwich, on the Stour just outside Canterbury, claims to be the smallest town in Britain by charter. It once served as Canterbury’s river port — stone for the cathedral was landed here — and still has its little timber-framed town hall by the water. There’s a good riverside pub too. Sturry station is about 1km north.
