Sandwich stands two miles from the sea now, but in the Middle Ages it was one of England’s busiest ports and one of the Cinque Ports, until the Wantsum Channel silted up. Much of the medieval town survives. By the River Stour you’ll find the Barbican, a gatehouse at the end of the bridge, and Fisher Gate of 1384, the only one of the original town gates left. St Clement’s Church has a 12th-century Norman tower, and the Guildhall museum displays a 1300 copy of Magna Carta found in the town’s archive in 2015. Royal St George’s golf links, towards Sandwich Bay, hosts the Open roughly every ten years, and Deal is a few miles south.
