Aylesford sits on the Medway just north-west of Maidstone, its old timbered houses gathered above a narrow medieval ragstone bridge. The Carmelite friary here, known as The Friars, is a working religious house and open to visitors, with gardens and a tearoom. Aylesford station is about 1km west, on the line between Maidstone and Strood.
