Say it “item”. Ightham’s small centre on The Street has timber-framed buildings such as the 16th-century George and Dragon pub and the Town House, a medieval hall house (built round an open central hall) altered in the 1500s. St Peter’s church, a short walk away on a steep hillside, has a life-size stone effigy of Sir Thomas Cawne in armour from about 1374, and a 1641 monument to Dame Dorothy Selby, a noted needleworker, carved with two of her designs, one of them showing the Gunpowder Plot. Both lived at Ightham Mote, the moated medieval manor nearby that the National Trust now looks after. Oldbury hillfort, from the Iron Age and covering 123 acres, is also close by.
