Places to explore in GwyneddWales · North Wales

Gwynedd holds the roof of Wales. The volcanic and glacier-worn mountains of Eryri rise to Yr Wyddfa, the highest ground in the country, with the ridged crags of Tryfan and the blue tarn of Llyn Idwal beneath. Southward stands the cwm-scooped bulk of Cadair Idris above the sands of the Mawddach. This is slate country, its quarries at Dinorwig and Llechwedd now a World Heritage Site, and the medieval princes of Gwynedd ruled Wales from these mountain fastnesses. Beyond the peaks the Llŷn peninsula reaches out into the Irish Sea.
