Carnedd Dafydd is a 1,045m top in the Carneddau, the sprawling range of grassy whaleback hills in the north of Eryri (Snowdonia). The name is traditionally linked to Dafydd ap Gruffudd, a thirteenth-century Welsh prince, as is its higher neighbour Carnedd Llewelyn a couple of miles to the northeast. The going on top is broad and stony, with steep ground falling away north into Cwm Llafar, and most walkers climb Carnedd Dafydd on a horseshoe from Ogwen that starts up the steep nose of Pen yr Ole Wen. These are big, open hills that hold cloud and feel remote quickly, so pick a clear day if you can, and carry what you need to navigate if you can’t.
