Take on the Carneddau from the south and Pen yr Ole Wen is the first hill you meet — a 979m peak rising straight up from Llyn Ogwen in Eryri, Snowdonia. The direct route from the lake is famously steep and relentless, a long pull on rough ground with barely a flat step, so plenty of people take the gentler line from the west instead. Once you are up, the ground eases onto broad grassy tops, and a ridge leads on to Carnedd Dafydd and the higher Carneddau beyond. The Welsh name is traditionally read as “head of the white light”, though “head of the white slope” is now thought more likely.
