The slate terraces of Dinorwig climb the hillside above Llanberis in vast grey steps, worked out and abandoned since the quarry closed in 1969 and now part of the UNESCO Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales. Ruined barracks, inclines and workshops are strewn across the mountainside, and the old repair sheds at the foot hold the National Slate Museum. It’s open access land, though loose spoil and old workings mean real care underfoot.
