Rack railway climbing to Yr Wyddfa's summit.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only public rack-and-pinion railway in Britain, grinding up from Llanberis to a station just below the 1,085-metre summit of Yr Wyddfa. It opened in 1896 and still hauls its carriages up the gradient on a toothed centre rail. Tickets are timed and sell out in summer, and trains turn back short of the top in bad weather.
